Short answer: they do different jobs.If you want to turn hour-long podcasts, streams or webinars into a batch of shorts, use OpusClip. If you already shoot 30-second-to-few-minute videos and want eye-catching captions, B-roll and automatic silence cuts, use Submagic. On regular plans Submagic only accepts uploads up to 2 minutes (Starter) to 30 minutes (Business).

Most "OpusClip vs Submagic" pages are written by one of the two companies. Here's a neutral take built only from both companies' pricing pages and help centers — and the one question that settles it: is your source video long or short?

OpusClip is priced by minutes of footage; Submagic by number of videos. Submagic's AI extras cost 1–3 more credits each, so heavier editing means fewer videos per month (help center). Its comparison table also shows that silence removal, bad-take removal, AI hook titles and similar AI edits aren't in Starter — they start at Pro.

Choose OpusClip if…

  • Your raw material is 30+ minute podcasts, livestreams, webinars or interviews
  • You want AI to decide where the good moments are
  • You process under 150 minutes a month — $15 removes the watermark

Note: OpusClip's non-English languages are mostly in beta, where emojis and highlighted keywords may be inaccurate.

Choose Submagic if…

  • You post short talking-head or product videos filmed on your phone
  • You want the animated captions, B-roll, sound effects and zooms common in viral shorts
  • You want silences and bad takes cut automatically (Pro and up)

Submagic's languages page lists 49 caption languages, including Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin and Cantonese.

Using both: the right order

  1. Cut the long recording into candidate clips with OpusClip.
  2. Send only the keepers to Submagic for caption styling, B-roll and effects.

Both Starter plans together run $34/month. Since OpusClip already adds AI captions, start with OpusClip alone and add Submagic only if its captions feel too plain.

FAQ

Q. Can Submagic clip a 1-hour podcast?

Not on regular plans: each upload is capped at 2 minutes on Starter, 5 on Pro and 30 on Business (official help center). Turning long videos into clips uses Magic Clips, a separate add-on subscription that costs 8 credits per run. If long recordings are your main source, OpusClip is the more direct fit.

Q. Does OpusClip add captions too?

Yes. Even OpusClip's free plan includes AI captions with emojis and keyword highlights. Adding Submagic makes sense when you want more caption styles, B-roll, sound effects or automatic silence and bad-take removal.

Q. Can I try both for free?

OpusClip's free plan gives 60 minutes a month (watermarked). Submagic's free trial needs no credit card and lets you upload and edit 3 short videos; watermark-free downloads require a paid plan.

Q. Which languages does Submagic support?

Its official languages page lists 49 caption languages, including Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin and Cantonese.
